Frequently Asked Questions
This depends on the type of floor you have. With a laminate parquet floor, this is limited. Typically, laminate parquet floors are sold with a 2.5mm top layer up to a 4mm top layer. With a 2.5mm top layer, you can sand the floor once. With a thicker top layer of 4mm, it can be sanded up to twice. Usually, this also depends on the condition and situation of the floor, which we can determine during a visit.
If you have a solid oak floor that is a few centimeters thick, you can sand the floor until the click system becomes visible. Solid floorboards are clicked (slid) into place. You can sand up to the click system, which can be done up to 5 to 10 times.
Usually, up to 1mm is sanded off. In cases of cupping of the planks or deep scratches and wear, a thicker top layer may be sanded off.
The differences are mainly in the “look” and maintenance. Oil provides a natural look, as the oil penetrates deeply into the wood’s pores, making the wood’s structure very visible.
For example, with an oak floor, many colors are available.
However, maintenance needs to be done correctly and on time. With varnish, the options in terms of “tint and look” are more limited. It can either have an untreated wood look or be slightly darker. Maintenance is much easier compared to oil.
When choosing between oil, varnish, or color oil and varnish, you can consider the following three factors:
- Appearance of your floor
- Maintenance
- Price
An oiled floor looks very different from a varnished floor. It appears much more natural, with colors that deeply penetrate the wood’s pores. A varnished floor is only slightly darker than an untreated floor.
The maintenance of a varnished floor is much easier than that of an oiled floor. Additionally, a varnished floor is much sturdier. An oiled floor requires regular maintenance.
A varnish option is always more expensive than an oil option. For example, a 50mยฒ floor can be oiled with 1.5 to 2 liters of oil in one day. Varnishing a 50mยฒ floor requires about 15 to 17 liters of varnish and takes two days. As a result, the costs increase.
With oil, it is crucial that maintenance is done properly and on time. The floor, for example, needs to be mopped with a natural soap once every two weeks. Additionally, the floor needs to be cleaned and re-oiled. The recommendation is once a year, but this can also be once every two years. With varnish, there is less maintenance.
It is important to clean the floor regularly with the correct cleaning products. Absolutely avoid using products that are not recommended. If the top varnish layer has worn off, we can lightly sand the top layer, clean the floor, and apply another layer.
This depends on the finish. In any case, the floor is walkable and lightly usable after 24 hours.
With oil and household varnish, the floor remains fragile for the first 3 to 5 days. Additionally, the floor is not water-resistant for the first 7 to 10 days. Do not cover the floor with rugs or other materials during the first two weeks. In the case of project varnish, the floor is fully usable after 24 hours.
Do this only in the first two weeks with “breathable cardboard.” This is a product that allows the floor to continue to receive oxygen, enabling the curing process to continue. Using standard protective coverings can go wrong.
